They would have been so happy

My mom and dad, Kathleen and David, were proud democrats. Mom was the quintessential feminist, a woman of faith, and a writer with keen insight and a PhD dissertation on women and power. My dad was also a feminist, a progressive Lutheran pastor (ELCA) who went to seminary as the Lutheran church was growing its social justice roots. They were both active in the peace movement, advocating for withdrawal from Vietnam, and as strong proponents of nuclear disarmament. They were active supporters of liberal politicians. Fortunately, they both lived to vote for Joe Biden, and to see our nation turn towards democracy once again.

I know they would both be thrilled about the 2024 democratic ticket. I am so sad that they didn’t live long enough to vote for Kamala and Tim. Dad, especially, would have been so proud of Gov. Walz, and I can hear him telling everyone he knows that Tim is a member of an ELCA congregation. Mom, a one-time public school teacher in Oakland’s public schools would be so proud to be voting for a woman born in Oakland.

Dad died in May of 2021 and mom followed several months later in January of 2022. While they are no longer with us in body, we feel their presence every day. And whenever I think of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, I will think of joyful, loving, and thoughtful parents. I love you, Mom and Dad.
